This past weekend, we decided to introduce the dogs (Jedi and Cujo) to the cat (Butters). Butters had been in the basement, separated from the dogs for about a week prior to the introduction, and had taken very well to everyone in the house and the new setting. Unfortunately, we brought both the dogs in at once and Jedi became protective of Cujo. Cujo and Butters now seem to tolerate each other, but are both somewhat weary. Interestingly enough, Butters always keeps an eye on Cujo, while Cujo refused to make eye contact with Butters. I suppose he’s under the impression that if he doesn’t acknowledge the cat, it doesn’t exist! Jedi and Butters, on the other hand, have not taken well to each other. Jedi seems to be territorial and somewhat aggressive. This may be a result of an incident he had as a puppy. Jedi was incredibly curious and would ‘play’ games with the neighbour’s cat by jumping back and forth and barking through the fence in the backyard. As his curiosity grew, he stuck his nose under the fence, and caught a clean swipe. Oddly enough, we had all expected Jedi to take well to Butters, as he’s incredibly gentle. Cujo, on the other hand, is quite territorial, which is a characteristic trait of Schnauzers. Surprise, surprise.
