Trip Down Under - 2007

Devi was selected to present at the 3rd International Innovations in Nursing conference in Perth, Australia. In true mooch style, I tagged along! We managed to visit Dubai, Australia, and New Zealand in just a few short days.

Dubai - Pictures

We had a six hour stop over in Dubai, so we decided to meet up with my aunt, who resides there, and toured the city for four hours. The construction and architecture was quite interesting with a real east meets west feel. Unfortunately, there isn't much to share after a mere four hour visit, but I was glad we had the opportunity to get a glimpse of Dubai.

Australia - Pictures

We spent five days in Perth. There was a rather large, but cute, outdoor shopping complex by our hotel on Victoria St. It had a variety of stores from large department style to small boutiques and antique shops. Each area had its own vibe. One that really stood out was London court, which had tea shops and specialty English stores. We visited King's Park, which has a large botanical walk and a great view of the city.

We also spent a day at Rottnest island, a well-maintained wildlife preserve, 19km off the coast of Western Australia. This island is a vehicle free zone with no private vehicles permitted on the island. Rottnest is well known for its snorkeling, diving, surfing and swimming. While here, we signed up for an underwater explorer tour, the highlights of which were the marine life, reefs, and two wrecks - Macedon and Dentom Holme.

New Zealand - Pictures

We spent three days in Auckland. Our hotel was in the heart of the city, just a five minute walk from the famous Sky Tower and seconds away from Queen St., the main shopping area. While in Auckland, we visited the Sky Tower and took a day trip to Waitomo and Te Puia.

The Waitomo Glowworm Cave is known for its population of glowworms, Arachnocampa luminosa. These glowworms, the size of an average mosquito, are found exclusively in New Zealand. Our tour included a boat ride through the underground Waitomo River where the glowworms are the only source of light, creating a sky of living lights resembling a starry night.

While at Te Puia, we visited a Polynesian spa and attended an interesting Maori cultural show. We then toured the geothermal area, which contained boiling mud pools, fumaroles, and geysers.

Our last day was spent at Mount Eden, which was quite beautiful. We were able to view the entire city from the summit (196 metres above sea level).
